The following list of Frequently Asked Questions is designed to help you get a better understanding of West A, our beliefs and practices. Who is God? There is one God in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. "God is love," and He loves the world. "God is light," and He is completely pure and righteous. "God is a consuming fire," and He will judge the world with justice. God is the creator and sustainer of the universe and all living things. The only way to God is through His Son Jesus Christ. -Genesis 1:1; John 14: 6; Acts 17:24-28;I John 1:5; John 4:16; Hebrews 11:3; Hebrews 12:29 Who is Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ was with God in the very beginning, and God created the universe through Him. Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, took on flesh and blood and made His dwelling among us, and His literal death on the cross saved us from our sin. His bodily resurrection changed the course of history and created the path to eternal life with God. He presently intercedes before God for His children. He will return one day to judge the earth. Matthew 1:18-21; John 1:1-4; John 1:14; John 3:16; I Corinthians 15:1-8; Hebrews 7:25 Who is the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit's primary role in the life of the believer is to counsel us in the truth, convict us of sin, witness to Jesus and empower us to live holy lives pleasing to God. The Holy Spirit is the Teacher of God's Word and the Guide for daily living. John 16:5-15; Galatians 5:22-24 What is the Bible? Our primary source for understanding and teaching comes from the Bible, which we hold to be the inerrant Word of God. We have no other book. The Old and New Testaments are the supreme and final authority for faith and life. In the essentials of faith clearly expressed in its pages, we seek unity of conviction. 2 Timothy 3:16 What about the "end times"? Biblical prophecy can be interpreted in many ways. One of the things on which the Bible is clear is that Christ will return, and God will ultimately be victorious. Those who abide in Christ Jesus will receive eternal life. We anxiously await His coming and look forward to His heavenly reign. I Thessalonians 4:13-17 What does it mean that West A is a non-denominational church? It simply means that we are not associated, affiliated or connected with any denomination, man-made organization or institution. Our only allegiance is to the Lord and His Word. We can fellowship with brothers and sisters of Christ anywhere at any time without answering to a national headquarters somewhere. Does West A believe in missions? Absolutely. We currently support 21 missions/ministries. People are baptized regularly by immersion here. Why is that? Because the Bible commands it. (Matthew 28:18-20). Baptism must picture three realities to be a Scriptural baptism: death, burial and resurrection. Why? Because water baptism is our public identification with Christ as Lord and Savior and our baptism pictures His death, burial and resurrection. Romans 6:1-4 Do I have to be baptized (by immersion) to become a member of West A? Yes. The Bible says the Lord "added to the church" those who were being saved and baptized. (Acts 2:41 and Acts 2:47). That’s why, to become a member of West A, you need to have a personal salvation experience with the Lord and should immediately be obedient to Him in water baptism. (See Acts 8:36-39; Acts 9:17-18; Acts 10:47-48; Acts 16:31-33) If I was baptized (by immersion) in another church, do I have to be baptized again to become a member of West A? No. You observe the Lord’s Supper here every week. Why is that? Acts 20:7 says, "On the first day of the week we came together to break bread." Jesus didn’t prescribe how often we were to take communion/the Lord’s Supper, He just said that we were to "do this in remembrance of Me." (I Corinthians 11:23b-25) The Bible sure seems to be a high priority around West A. Why is that? We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God and is the ultimate authority and our only source for truth. (See II Timothy 3:16-17.) Preaching seems to be another high priority around West A. Why is that? The Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church and told them that it was through "the foolishness of preaching" that God chose to save people. (I Corinthians 1:21) He also instructed his young son in the faith, Timothy, to "Preach the Word." (See II Timothy 4:1-5.) Is West A a charismatic church? No. We are a "Spirit-filled" church (I Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 5:18). We believe the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit is the power to witness (see Acts 1:8), not to speak in tongues. We believe the gifts of the Spirit are not toys to play with but rather tools to build with and must always be used to build and bless the body of Christ. How do I become a member? We ask you to make your decision publicly, in accordance with Matthew 10:32-33, by coming forward during our decision time at the close of one of our Sunday services. To become a member, you need to have a personal salvation experience with Jesus Christ and be obedient to Him in baptism. If you haven’t done that, that’s step one and you can do that when you come forward. If you’ve already accepted Christ and been baptized by immersion, you do not have to be baptized again. When you come forward, we’ll have counselors to help you. (If you are going to be baptized, you do not need to bring any thing. Everything is provided for you.) Is West A affiliated with the Disciples of Christ (Christian Churches) in America? No. We do fellowship with some 6,000 independent Christian Churches in America but there is no denominational headquarters, hierarchy, restrictions or expectations placed upon us. |
